As a rule of thumb, choose a capacity at least 50 pounds above the rider’s weight. Remember that baskets, oxygen tanks, and groceries count too.

Look at the frame, not the paint

Reinforced steel frames carry load. Aluminum saves lifting weight. Carbon fiber now offers both in premium chairs — the Jazzy Carbon weighs 43.6 pounds yet carries 300.

Match the material to the job: a chair that lives in a trunk wants aluminum, while a daily outdoor workhorse wants steel.

Batteries decide your real range

Brochure range assumes a light rider on flat ground. Real range falls with rider weight, hills, and battery age. Bigger amp-hour batteries and lithium chemistry both help. Lithium packs also weigh less and last more charge cycles.
