A power lift recliner is one of the most useful pieces of mobility equipment for seniors and individuals with limited lower-body strength. Rather than just a comfortable chair, a lift chair is a medical device that gently tilts the entire seat forward to help the user stand without putting strain on their hips, knees, or lower back. Here’s what every buyer should know.
The Four Main Types of Lift Chairs
2-Position Lift Chairs
These chairs recline slightly — enough to elevate the legs and reduce pressure — but do not go all the way flat. They’re the most compact option and often the least expensive. A 2-position chair is appropriate if the user primarily wants lift assistance to stand and mild leg elevation. Not ideal for sleeping or extended recline.
3-Position Lift Chairs
The most popular category. A 3-position chair reclines further than a 2-position model — far enough for a comfortable nap position, though not completely flat. Three positions: upright, TV watching, and sleep position. These chairs typically extend the leg rest while reclining the back as a single unit.
Brands we carry in 3-position: Golden Technologies (Relaxer, Comforter, MaxiComfort), Pride Mobility (VivaLift series).
Infinite-Position Lift Chairs
Infinite-position chairs have independent back and leg adjustments — you can raise the legs without reclining the back, or recline the back without moving the legs. This is critical for users with circulatory conditions, edema (leg swelling), or who need specific positioning for GERD or respiratory conditions.
Many infinite-position chairs recline to nearly flat, making them usable as a sleeping chair.
Zero-Gravity Lift Chairs
Zero gravity positioning places the legs above the heart, which reduces pressure on the spine, improves circulation, and can reduce lower back pain. The position mimics NASA’s neutral body posture from spacecraft design. Zero-gravity chairs are recommended for users with severe edema, spinal conditions, or post-surgical swelling.
All zero-gravity chairs are infinite-position chairs — they’re a subset, not a separate mechanical type.
What to Measure Before You Buy
A lift chair that’s the wrong size can be uncomfortable and even unsafe. Measure the user in a seated position:
- Seat depth: The distance from the back of the knee to the back of the hip. The chair’s seat depth should match within 1–2 inches — too deep and the user won’t be able to sit back fully.
- Seat width: Should be 2–4 inches wider than the user’s hips.
- Seat height: When seated, the user’s feet should rest flat on the floor with knees at approximately 90°. Most lift chairs offer multiple seat heights.
- Weight capacity: Standard chairs typically support 350–375 lbs. Heavy-duty models go up to 700 lbs. Never buy a chair rated below the user’s weight.
Features Worth Paying Extra For
- Heat and massage: Helpful for muscle tension and circulation. Pride’s VivaLift series and Golden’s MaxiComfort include infrared heat and multi-zone massage.
- USB charging port: Increasingly standard on new models — useful for charging phones and tablets from the chair without reaching.
- Two-motor vs. single-motor: Two-motor chairs allow independent back and leg adjustment. Single-motor chairs move as a unit. If you need infinite-position adjustability, you need a two-motor chair.
- Fabric choice: Vinyl/Ultrafabrics are easier to clean (important for incontinence). Fabric upholstery is more breathable. Leather is premium but can be hot in summer.
Does Medicare or Insurance Cover Lift Chairs?
Medicare Part B covers the lift mechanism of a power lift chair — not the chair itself. The lift motor is considered Durable Medical Equipment (DME) with a doctor’s prescription. Coverage is typically 80% of the Medicare-approved amount for the motor, leaving the user responsible for 20% plus the cost of the chair frame and upholstery.
To use Medicare benefits for the lift mechanism, the chair must be purchased through a Medicare-enrolled DME supplier. Access 2 Mobility does not bill Medicare directly — our staff can explain how the coverage works and help you find the right chair, while you arrange Medicare billing through an enrolled supplier in your area.
